It is important to have a better and deeper understanding about a crucial time that Spain suffered at the death of Carlos II.
As we have studied in class, Carlos was the last king of The Habsburg Dinasty, thanked to he didn't have heir to continue keeping the throne. During that time, revolts and the discontent with the monarchy appeared in Spain.
As a result of that situation, we started a Civil War taking part two different ideas. Some people were in favour of continuing the Habsburg Dinasty with someone related from the family and others that were that against that idea, letting the Bourbon Family control Spain.
But why does the conflict started?
Both Luis XIV (The king of France) and Leopoldo I (The King of the closest person of the Habsurg Dinasty, that controlled the Sacro Germanic Empire), were married with the daughters of Felipe IV, the father of Carlos II.
Both claimed the rights of controlling Spain. The war ended with the victory of the Bourbon Family, but, what prize did they pay for owning Spain? They had to give some territories to other nations due to the fear that they had for Spain. Due to this fact, Spain gave Menorca, Gibraltar (that still today is in control of the United Kingdom) and some parts of Netherlands. We signed that agreement in the TREATY OF UTRETCH in 1713.
Here you can print the outline that we have done in class today. Any questions can be answered if you post below!
